What is microcement? Uses, types, application and advantage

Microcement is a thin decorative coating used to create smooth, continuous surfaces without visible joints. It is made from cement, fine aggregates, resins, mineral pigments and performance-enhancing additives. Because the finished coating is usually only 2–3 mm thick, it can often be applied over existing tiles, concrete, plaster, screed and other stable surfaces.

Where Is Microcement Used?

Microcement is suitable for residential, commercial and hospitality interiors. It can be applied to floors, walls, staircases, bathrooms, kitchens, countertops, reception desks and feature walls. When the correct system and protective sealer are used, it can also be specified for selected exterior surfaces and wet areas.

Its seamless appearance works particularly well in modern homes, villas, restaurants, hotels, retail stores and offices. The absence of grout lines also makes the finished surface easier to clean and visually more spacious.

Main Types of Microcement

Different microcement systems are available for specific surfaces and design requirements. Fine-grain microcement produces a smooth, refined finish and is commonly used on walls and decorative features. Medium or coarse-grain products offer greater texture and durability, making them more suitable for floors and high-traffic areas.

Microcement is also available in one-component and two-component systems. The right choice depends on the substrate, location, expected traffic and required finish.

How Is Microcement Applied?

Application begins with inspecting and preparing the existing surface. Cracks, movement and uneven areas must be repaired before applying primer and reinforcement mesh where required. Several thin base and finishing coats are then applied by hand. After sanding, the surface is protected with an appropriate sealer.
